UNESCO is a UN agency founded in 1945 focused on Education, Science, and Culture.
Acqua Mater considers these three areas of knowledge as fundamental pillars underpinning all the projects it undertakes. Sustainability is based on the triple bottom line: Economy - Environment - Society. But Acqua Mater, like UNESCO, adds a fourth pillar to these: CULTURE.
In 1961, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO was established to promote greater knowledge of what the ocean represents for humanity and all life on Earth.
At the UN Ocean Conference 2017, IOC-UNESCO launched the "Ocean Literacy for All" initiative, along with the Ocean Literacy Portal.
In 2019, Acqua Mater was invited by the IOC-UNESCO to participate in two international workshops at its headquarters in Venice:
The second workshop led Acqua Mater to start developing a series of actions aimed at the Private Sector.
Since 2019, Acqua Mater has been continuously collaborating with various international initiatives of this Program, including the SEA BEYOND educational project for children and teenagers, carried out in partnership with the Prada Group, and the "Ocean & Climate" Village Exhibition.
In 2021, Acqua Mater was invited to join the select group of international key collaborators of Ocean Literacy With All (OLWA), a Programme coordinated by IOC-UNESCO and endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade.
Patricia Furtado is also a member of its Steering Committee and co-leads OLWA’s “Component 3”, which goal is "to develop training, partnerships and other opportunities for different audiences, including educators, journalists, government, private sector, civil society, NGOs, diplomatic professionals, among others".
